New Year's Resolutions - 5 Goals for 2021

Happy New Year!

2021 is finally here, and the time for working towards a healthier, happier you is right now!

It’s probably fair to say that most of us set some kind of new year’s resolutions each new year; it’s also true that by February 1 each year, most of these resolutions are abandoned.

Rather than setting “New Year’s Resolutions”, why not set achievable life goals instead?

Why Set New Year’s Resolutions or Life Goals?

The biggest factor to successfully maintaining a resolution (and the biggest potential impediment to it) is your own mindset. The best intentions on January 1st often fail within just a few weeks, as the holidays end and real-life once again takes over.

By setting a “life goal” rather than a “New Year’s resolution”, you automatically train your subconscious mind to associate your goal with your life in general, rather than a specified time frame limited by the “new” year – because let’s face it, the year is only “new” for a very short time.

The type of goals or new year’s resolutions you set is important too. We all have the loftiest of intentions as we welcome the new year, but how realistic are they? Small, steady steps tend to get you further than attempting giant leaps does. As such, you need to not only set a goal that is important to you; it needs to be achievable. Goals or new year’s resolutions should be specific and realistic – and simple is best.

5 New Year’s Resolutions to Set for a Happier, Healthier You in 2021

Every single one of us will attest that the past year has been extremely challenging, if not downright awful.

2021 presents a fresh, clean slate for launching into a better future, and now is the perfect opportunity to set some tangible, achievable goals to embrace to cultivate a happier, healthier you.

  1. Learn a New Skill

What appeals to you? From joining a pottery or calligraphy class to taking tennis lessons, joining a yoga studio, taking foreign language lessons, or learning a musical instrument, computer skills, photography … the options are unlimited and you will improve your mental wellbeing, meet new friends, make new connections, reduce boredom, and create a new level of self-confidence.

  1. Eliminate a Bad Habit

Quitting smoking is the big one here – and the most difficult, but we all have bad habits and eliminating any of them is an achievement and a step towards a healthier, happier you. For example, say goodbye to skipping meals, eating chocolate every day, having coffee after 4 pm, staying up too late, playing games on your phone in bed late at night … the choice is yours!

  1. Focus on Life’s Essentials

Choose healthy food options. Manage your portion sizes. Make sure treats are just that – and not everyday foods. Drink plenty of fresh water. Get fresh air and light every day.

  1. Create (and Maintain!) a Realistic Fitness Plan

Exercise is not just critical for your physical health – it’s also essential for your mental and emotional wellbeing. Getting your body moving is a great stress-buster, helps you maintain a healthy weight, and is the simplest thing you can do to stave off anxiety and depression. Make a plan to regularly get moving and commit to it. Do something you enjoy – join a gym, play a team sport, swim, hike, jog, dance, do yoga, or simply go for a short walk most days.

  1. Make Time for YOU

Whether you thrive on spending quality time with family and friends (in person or virtually) or prefer quiet time on your own – or ideally, a mix of these – make taking regular time for yourself a priority. Do what you love and what makes you feel happy – from reading a book to swimming in the ocean to taking a relaxing bath to walking in nature or your neighbourhood – make time for what feeds your mind, body, and soul.
