Fat Transfer

As we age, we tend to lose volume in our faces, particularly the mid-face, contributing to the falling of the skin in a downwards direction. This may make our cheeks look rather sunken and the whole face a little empty. A similar appearance may be evident if one loses a significant amount of weight. Fat injections may volumise the mid-face by transplanting fat taken from different parts of the body.

Fat is a living tissue and when it is transferred some of the fat will die, as it has been traumatised to some extent as well as taken away from its usual blood supply. At the end of a transfer session the area may look like it is fully corrected and filled with fat, but this will slowly settle over the following weeks. It is impossible to estimate just how much of the transferred fat will be lost with each session, but this means that usually a number of sessions may be necessary. Fat survives better in some areas than in others, and in some people better than others.
